Hi! I'm Zachary Kai. Inspired by James and Joe, to experiment and to avoid breaking my live sites, I've created this minisite to play around in and test stuff. Below is a list of everything here. Have fun browsing! For more of what I make, see my book blog, independent press, and personal site.

Experiments

Random esoterica and things I wished to make I couldn't fit anywhere else. The site's shoebox!

Weird Web October

Each tenth month of the year, Jay Zuerndorfer organizes Weird Web October. Each day, you make a website inspired by a prompt.

2025

  1. Transparency: a blackout poem, taken from Gatsby quotes.
  2. Maps: a prose poem with a cartographical theme.
  3. Scramble: a window into my usual state of mind.
  4. Filters: in which I ask for the help of a baleen whale.
  5. Remix: a prose poem about how the entire universe is a remix.
  6. Solids: a musing on the foolish dream of the solid state.
  7. Sub-optimal: a mini essay on the pursuit of optimization.
  8. Containers: because we're all in and surrounded by these.
  9. Blink: don't forget to do it.
  10. Warning: some of these are made to be heeded. Take note.
  11. Camera: this is what photography can teach you.
  12. Battle: a poem about being wary of artificial divides.
  13. Upside-Down lost in the dizzying confusion of it all.
  14. Doubles: consciousness split in two (or not?)
  15. Unicode: the fabled character system as a library.
  16. Transition: an ode to the internet's design system.
  17. Illumination: fragments of thoughts on light and shadow.
  18. Trading: because it's a good one we make here.
  19. Bounce: a reminder that if you don't, you'll break.
  20. Hidden: let the light in, but don't let it overpower.
  21. Language: it's always and forever changing.
  22. Memory: to exist is to always embrace the tension.
  23. Style: my (perhaps) foolish love of the serif.
  24. Counter: the usable vs the exceptional is infinitesimal.
  25. Empty: don't feel you have to always fill the void.
